Efficiency is the goal when designing piping systems. But poorly designed systems can result in environmental impacts including emission releases and soil contamination. Workers in the field can also be at risk from improperly managed piping systems. API 570 is one of several national codes dictating quality standards for piping systems. API 570 piping inspection is an important part of quality assurance. Read more to learn about API 570 piping inspection.
What Is API?
API is a standards-setting organization that was founded in 1919 and represents the North American natural gas and oil industry. It has grown to manage a group of 700 standards covering gas and oil security, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. API 570 is one of these numerous standards, and it particularly addresses pipe infrastructure safety and efficiency.
What Is API 570 Piping Inspection?
API 570 refers to an American Petroleum Institute specification for routine pipe inspections. The code defines standards for both repairing and altering piping systems. In addition to inspection, rating, repair, and alteration procedures, the code covers all applicable piping systems. Metallic and FRP-reinforced plastic piping systems as well as in-service pressure-relieving devices are subject to this code.
Hydrocarbon and chemical piping that has been installed may be inspected using this Code as well unless specifically designated as optional. This publication does not cover the inspection of specialty equipment including instrumentation, exchanger tubes, and control valves.
The purpose of this Code is to define the maintenance programme required to ensure the long-term integrity of piping systems. The programme should be able to provide fairly accurate and timely assessments to determine whether any damage to piping might jeopardise the continued safe operation. It is also the purpose of this Code to require owners/users to address any inspection findings that call for corrective actions to maintain the integrity of pipes in accordance with an appropriate risk assessment.
What Does the Standard Cover?
API 570 is concerned with metallic and fibreglass-reinforced plastic piping systems. API 570 governs pipe systems involving process fluids, hydrocarbons, chemical products, natural gas, high-pressure gases, and other flammable or toxic fluids. When the code was first published in 1993, it was written for systems in the petroleum and chemical processing industries.
However, this code may be applied to virtually any branch of industry where hazardous materials are transported via piping systems. API 570 doesn’t cover certain specialised equipment, nor equipment that has been decommissioned; instead, it covers techniques that are temporarily out of service. The standard does not cover the inspection of equipment using exchanger tubes or control valves.
